This comprehensive course provides the knowledge foundation, test-taking strategies, and technical preparation needed to succeed on your certification examination.
FNCB certifications align with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials (2021) and the FNCB Core Competencies, validating mastery of forensic nursing science and practice at both Generalist (Level 1) and Advanced (Level 2) educational levels.

FNCB certification candidates can take their examination in comfort from home. Choose your own time and place during the testing month—no expensive testing center fees or time off work required.
Testing Windows
Four testing opportunities per year:

Question Formats
All examinations use NCLEX-style questions including multiple-choice, ranking, and matching formats. There are no trick questions. Questions are threaded with Bloom’s taxonomy, core competencies, and national foundational documents.
Important: Use your personal computer on home or public WiFi. Do not use networked work computers—LockDown Browser™ may be perceived as a threat by enterprise networks. You must have full administrator access to your computer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What credentials will I earn?
Upon passing, you’ll earn the trademarked credentials GFN-C® (Generalist Forensic Nurse-Certified) or AFN-C® (Advanced Forensic Nurse-Certified). Your name, state, credential, and certification dates will be listed on the FNCB website.
Why can’t I take the Advanced exam with years of practice experience?
FNCB certifications align with AACN educational levels. Level 1 (GFN-C) is for diploma, ADN, or BSN-prepared nurses. Level 2 (AFN-C) requires an MSN or DNP degree with coursework in physiology, pharmacology, and advanced health assessment and differential diagnosis.
What if I fail the examination?
You’ll receive notification within two months with information about content areas needing additional study. You may retake the test once at a discounted rate after waiting 30 days. If you fail the retest, you must wait 1 year before repurchasing and retaking the examination.
Is there a practice test?
Yes! This course includes practice quizzes for both GFN and AFN certifications, allowing you to experience the testing format and technology before your actual examination.
How should I prepare?
Start early and develop a study plan. FNCB recommends forming study groups and enrolling in organizational review courses. Use the comprehensive content outlines and bibliography resources provided in this course to guide your preparation.
Eligibility Requirements
For GFN-C® (Generalist Forensic Nurse)
- RN license (diploma, ADN, or BSN)
- Unencumbered RN license
- Minimum direct clinical care hours in the forensic nursing populations
- Continuing education requirements as defined
For AFN-C® (Advanced Forensic Nurse)
- MSN or DNP degree from accredited program
- Graduate coursework in physiology, pharmacology, and advanced health assessment with differential diagnosis
- Unencumbered RN/APRN license
- Additional requirements as defined per specialty
